Life and Liberty Foundation (LLF)
The organisation's main focus is on the promotion of fundamental freedoms through the creation of safe societies and the assurance of safe custody. LLF aims to work on the protection of the right to life and liberty, the rule of law, fair treatment, equal access to justice, preventing crime and re-offending, advancing prisoner re-integration and ensuring justice for all.
They advance prison reforms through the restoration of prisoners’ rights to have contact with the outside world through the establishment of ‘integrated’ prison libraries with a long-term vision for systemic change in the criminal justice system. These ‘integrated’ libraries are envisioned to provide access to books, newspapers, magazines, letter-writing, improving Mulakat/E-Mulakat, legal aid, socio-psychological-legal counselling, skill development, and recreational activities. In keeping with the integrated approach, they are preparing to advocate for the prevention of unnecessary detention, strengthening the monitoring of custody institutions, improving grievance redressal and making women prisoners' rights a priority for prison authorities, legal aid bodies, the judiciary and parliamentarians.
Project with MHI:
MHI is collaborating with LLF to create five ‘integrated’ prison libraries for women prisoners in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh and five baseline libraries in three of these states. The objectives of the project are to remove barriers to women prisoners’ right to have
contact with the outside world and support better mental health by improving access to reading and writing, legal aid and assistance, recreational activities, family contact through Mulakat/E-Mulakat opportunities, socio-psychological-legal counselling, and access to grievance redressal, and, alongside, strengthening the capacities of the criminal justice system for the restoration of these rights.
