Dhanak
The organisation’s work includes crisis intervention, providing mental health counselling, legal guidance, police protection, and support for civil marriage solemnisation. The team at Dhanak supports those at risk of violence because of exercising their right to choice. Dhanak established India’s first gender-neutral shelter home for couples, providing a safe and supportive space for those affected by violence.
In addition to crisis intervention, Dhanak works to raise awareness of the right to choice, empower survivors to make informed choices about relationships and challenge discriminatory social norms.
Dhanak works collaboratively with stakeholders, including the police, Child Welfare Committees, among others, to ensure comprehensive support to their clients. With a network of partners across states, the organisation provides assistance in areas such as mental health, rehabilitation, legal protection, and safe accommodation.
Project with MHI:
Dhanak proposes to expand its services to reach more adolescent girls and women/queer individuals who face violence and discrimination. They plan to cover all the 10 Child Welfare Committees (CWCs) in Delhi, to address the gaps in follow-up support and counselling after children are restored to their families. This will help in reducing the risk of girls leaving home again, school dropout, forced child marriage or other familial restrictions.
For women and queer individuals, Dhanak plans to provide socio-legal counselling, collect data, and advocate for the establishment of safe houses and special cells in line with the Supreme Court directives. This will ensure that individuals from different states receive the legal protection and social support they need.
