Afkar India Foundation
Afkar's approach combines legal interventions, and community mobilization to promote justice and upliftment for marginalized groups. Over the years, their work has expanded to include organizing informal agrarian workers, and advocating for constitutional entitlements ensuring that displaced persons, who mainly belong to marginalized communities, have access to basic services like education, electricity, water, roads, housing, etc.
The organization’s initiatives include providing legal assistance and building local capacities. Afkar has trained para-legal volunteers, who assist in addressing rights violations and offer essential legal support to affected individuals and families. They have formed groups like the Mahila Shakti Sangathan, which works on issues of domestic violence and livelihood, providing both social and economic support to Dalit and Muslim women. They are also working to ensure people get ownership of their homes as part of the Visthapit Punarwas Sangharsh Samiti (an informal collective). Afkar is involved in the training of these groups and some of their members are volunteers with Afkar.
Project with MHI
Afkar's proposed project seeks to enhance its mental health support services for survivors and victims of communal violence, caste and gender violence. The project will establish a documentation system for rights violations and provide socio-psychological support. This would include training the community volunteers on basic counselling and creating community support groups. They will also focus on accessing basic entitlements for those living in and around the resettlement colonies and promoting peace and harmony in the area.
