Vanangana
At present, it operates in two districts: Chitrakoot (1993) and Banda (2003). It is registered under the Societies Act 21 (1860). Bundelkhand is a region that is grappling with an acute water shortage. The region has always been behind in development indicators.
Women are typically saddled with the burden of being water providers for their families. Their initial work was based on availability and access to drinking water from a gendered perspective. Vanangana works on organising women and youth through ‘Manchs’ or local groups, encourages communities to develop their leadership in the pursuit of justice, supports a nuanced interpretation of the law and constitution, and collaborates with various stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach for their service users.
Work with MHI
Starting from August 2024, Vanangana will be providing counselling and legal support for women prisoners in the region. They will undertake capacity building for women to understand gender, basic laws, information on their parole, legal rights, counselling family members, and rehabilitation. With the support of MHI, they plan to provide support to the women survivors of violence from neighbouring districts. They also plan to conduct capacity-building sessions for lawyers from Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, and Mahoba districts in Bundelkhand on new laws and feminist approaches.
