Jontu Centre for People & Nature Futures

The team has previously engaged in capacity-building work with farmers, documented indigenous knowledge systems related to climate and forests and also set up a YouTube channel - Kaadina Makkalu, to share stories on farming, climate and forests with the community. They have also published a handbook on coffee farming in 2023 to share with farmers attending their training programmes. Jontu also facilitates conversations between farmers and consumers around coffee. A project on elephants to observe and track their behaviour around farms was also done to understand adaptations in the shared ecological space.

Project with MHI

Through this project, Jontu will be hosting farmer climate schools in BR Hills and Palani Hills with the indigenous coffee farmers in the region, to build and sustain a climate-smart farming movement by building their producer capacities and enhancing financial literacy. They will be highlighting and incorporating the indigenous knowledge systems and ways, and also ensuring biodiversity conservation towards the better well-being of small land-holding growers.

Through their annual farmer festival - Krishi Habba, and other consumer-producer gatherings, Jontu will also be platforming progressive farmers and their produce and practices to the consumers, and in this way, making the climate-friendly farming practices a shared responsibility and ensuring their sustainability through the market.
