Pehchan

Working primarily with families engaged in construction labour, the organisation engages with communities experiencing intersecting marginalisations of class, caste, religion, and gender, alongside limited access to education and livelihood opportunities.

Pehchan has consistently focused on enabling access to education, promoting financial independence, and addressing gender-based violence. At the core of Pehchan’s approach is its education and vocational training model, which works in small batches of 50–60 girls over 4–5 month cycles. These programmes primarily engage Muslim girls, combining academic support with vocational skills such as computer training, beautician courses, fashion designing, and teaching pathways. The aim is to enable both continuity in education and access to livelihood opportunities. In addition to its ongoing programmes, Pehchan has also undertaken relief work, particularly in response to flooding due to the area’s proximity to the Yamuna River.

Project with MHI

The project with MHI aims to strengthen Pehchan’s ongoing work, continuing on an integrated approach to support women and girls through legal aid, mental health and psychosocial support, education, livelihoods, and access to documentation and entitlements.

A key focus of the project is to build a more structured support system for survivors of gender-based violence. This includes providing legal assistance, supporting them in navigating police processes, accessing free legal aid, and ensuring sustained follow-up through a dedicated social worker. Mental health and psychosocial support will be an important component, with efforts to reduce stigma and improve access to care. This will include community awareness initiatives integrated into existing programmes, as well as the engagement of a counsellor to provide regular emotional and psychological support.

Overall, the partnership with MHI seeks to build on Pehchan’s strong community relationships and rights-based approach to create a more holistic and responsive support system for women and girls facing multiple and intersecting vulnerabilities.
