Anhad Trust
Over the years, the organisation has worked across diverse geographies, including Delhi, Bihar, Gujarat, and Jammu & Kashmir, engaging with structurally marginalised communities through a rights-based lens.
In Kashmir, Anhad began its work nearly two decades ago in the aftermath of the 2005 earthquake, initially focusing on relief and rehabilitation. At the heart of its work in Kupwara is a community centre and library located in Khumriyal, which functions as a 24×7 safe and accessible space for community members, particularly youth and women. Khumriyal, located in proximity to the Line of Control, is a border area village that experiences heightened socio-economic and security vulnerabilities, shaping everyday life and access to services for the community. In this context, Anhad, through the community centre, hosts regular sessions on constitutional values, gender rights, and social issues, and also serves as a study space for students. In addition, Anhad has organised public events and campaigns, including those focused on gender justice, such as One Billion Rising.
The organisation runs a range of programmes aimed at education and livelihoods. These include a six-month diploma in computer applications and vocational training programmes in tailoring, cutting, and knitting, which are linked to income-generation opportunities such as Kashmiri Sozi embroidery. These initiatives are designed to enhance employability and are supported through linkages with producer companies for market access.
Project with MHI
The project with MHI seeks to strengthen and sustain Anhad’s ongoing work in Khumriyal, Kupwara, while building on its strong and long-standing community presence in the region. Anchored in the existing community centre, which serves as a key hub for engagement, the project adopts an integrated approach that brings together education, livelihoods, mental health, gender justice, and access to entitlements.
A key addition would be the integration of mental health and psychosocial support within Anhad’s existing programmes. The project will also focus on strengthening mechanisms to identify and respond to various forms of gender-based violence through community-based support systems, survivor accompaniment, and access to legal aid.
